Bye bye baby snowman

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

We’re going into Malmö tomorrow morning to see Smoothie from the PPK, Jojo from the same place and Melisser and Ryan! Woo. I have cookies in the oven and a whole day of good fun ahead of me. What else do you need really? We’re planning on going to a few stores (Astrid! Kina Center! Gray’s American Store!), have some good food and wander about Malmö enjoying the day. Hopefully there’ll be some coffee or tea at some point and preferably lots of chit chat. In the evening is the sneak peek opening of the new veg restaurant in Malmö, Astrid och Aporna – kök and hopefully that will be fun too. I’m really looking forward to going there for a proper meal sometime, maybe on my birthday in April :)

Just about 2 weeks ago was my vegetarian anniversary. I’ve been veg for three years now and it’s as good as ever. On the very same day was my 2 year blogiversary, yay! Congratulations little blog.

We’ve also had plenty of snow since I last updated this blog. But now it’s spring with flower buds beginning to peek out everywhere and snowdrops in full bloom. Say bye bye to the baby snowman!

our flat – the photo edition

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

It’s been over a month now since Alex and I moved and I haven’t posted any pictures yet. I hope I can redeem myself with these!

part of toy shelf

This is the left half of our toyshelf which is the top shelf in our bookshelf. Notice the slight gaming theme! Some are easy, like the paper Link. And if you’ve played WoW you’ll notice that the paper chest is from WoW. But so is the murloc in the back! While not official Blizzard it’s as close as you’ll get. And what most of you think is a walrus is actually a Tuskarr, part of the Kalu’ak! Also pictured is a tiny teapot, it’s actually an xmas ornament to hang in the tree, but I like it so much it has found a spot with our toys. Alex’s Weebl and Bob are also up there, I don’t see the point of having them but I guess some things are up to him to decide.

toy shelf

The right side of our toyshelf has a few of my favourite things ever. There’s the pig piggybank who wears braces/suspenders and a cap and is generally pretty bad ass and hungry. It also has a English gentleman (John Bull) who’s slightly thick (the way I like them!) and who also eats coins. The doll head is my favourite thing ever! I was toying with the idea of hanging it upside down in the window and applying red stickers shaped like spots of blood on the glass but Alex thought it  too morbid an idea. I disagreed with him of course, but she has gotten a permanent spot on the toy shelf, watching over the other toys and scaring off any potential burglars. Lastly there’s Homer who, if you press his button, will yell profanities.

paper link and his paper chest

Don’t you all just love Link? He will kick your ass if you don’t.

sofa

And lastly, here’s a part of our living room. The reddish orange sofa was free from a flea market – no one had wanted it – even when they tried to sell it at an auction. It is my favourite sofa ever and I would have paid a lot of money for it if I had to. The table is an old teak table by a Danish designer which I traded for my laptop. It used to be my mums and I had always said I wanted it. She told me it was REALLY expensive and I was willing to pay, but when she got ill and needed a small computer I decided to give her my laptop (there was no ulterior motive!) and she decided to give me the table as a thank you gift. My mum is the best! I’m not sure you can see it well in the picture but the fruit bowl is an old vinyl that my mother turned into an awesome bowl for me, again great mother. The dark purple wall is the only wall in the room painted that colour, the others are white. When I first moved in I hated the colour but as soon as the sofa came in place and we got the rest of the furniture up I changed my mind, it’s mindblowingly amazing!

I will not show you my kitchen yet, we’re waiting to have it repainted from the horrible ‘lilac mixed with grey’ and there are no curtains up yet, but trust me when I say it’s a great kitchen compared to what I’m used to. The oven heats up in 5  minutes!

Dear fellow bus passenger,

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

It makes me sad when you’ll only sit down on the seat next to me when the bus is crammed full. Even if the spot next to me is the most convenient you would rather squeeze in next to some loud teenagers. My butt isn’t even particularly big!  And when you do sit down, sighing loudly, do you have to sit leaning out towards the middle of the bus? I promise you won’t catch the dreaded fat just from sitting next from me for a short while. It makes me sad when you only choose to sit next to me because the only other free spot is next to that creepy alcoholic. Not that I really want your company, it just saddens me that you’ll often rather stand than sit down next to someone like me. I swear I’m not contagious.

Yours sincerely

Emmie

Merry Xmas!

glitter snowflakes
It’s xmas! Christmas Eve is THE day for celebration in Sweden. We spend all day preparing the food, eating clementines and home made sweets, listening to children asking ‘Can we open the presents yet?’, and then at 3pm everyone (except for most mums, they have to finish the food) sits down to watch some cartoons on TV (same show every year) and then we eat. We eat and we eat and we eat. It takes at least an hour, often more and it’s the same foods every year. After dinner, children whine over and over and over about their presents, but first there has to be dessert, often a rice pudding eaten with milk and cinnamon, but as with all traditions it differs between families. Some time in the evening the entire family sits down near the xmas tree and open their gifts. If you’ve been nice (and there are children!) Santa has knocked on the door and asked ‘Are there any nice kids here?’ to which all kids of course replied ‘YES!’ so Santa comes in with his sack of presents and gives them out. But if you haven’t been nice, or if there are no kids in the family we just open presents by the tree.

This Christmas Eve I am working until 4pm and after that my mum will pick me up, we’ll rush to my flat to get the food I’ve prepared and to get the presents I’ve made and then we go to mums for our dinner. There are three vegans in the family and two omnivores (+1 extra this year as we have a visitor) so the xmas smörgåsbord always looks a little different from most families.

Happy holidays!

I’m engaged!

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Just a quick post to say that I proposed to Alex today and that he said YES! We were in Bath, England in a lovely park outside the Royal Crescent and I decided to pop the question. Afterwards we had some lovely vegan food in a pub nearby and bought some kitchen gadgets. A lovely day!

To England I go!

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

We’re off to England in an hour. It’s vegan paradise compared to Sweden and I’m going to eat lots and lots of fresh lovely food. Alex’s mum has a lovely garden and we’ll be getting most of our food straight from there.

We’ll be visiting some markets, going to lots of car boot sales, looking at second hand shops and I’ll also be working on my accent. I want to move to south west England in a couple of years and it’s vital to be able to talk to the locals! Hopefully when we come back on the 20th I will have picked up a little bit of the accent.

We're leaving soon.

This is what I looked like last year before we went. I was really excited and nervous then, this time I’m more nervous about our cats and less nervous about meeting Alex’s mum. See you all later!

Me, me, me and no food.

Friday, June 13th, 2008

They say no news is good news and while it’s not always true that getting news is BAD per se, it seems like thats how it works for me. Things have been emotionally difficult for me lately. I’ve already told you about my mums arms and neck and the hernia that’s causing it. Well, it turns out life thought it hadn’t taken a big enough dump on my mum just yet and so we’ve recently found out she has a serious heart condition. Go life!

I’ve cried a lot, and to be honest.. I’ve been thinking about what would happen if she died. Not a nice thought considering she’s only 43. Damn life.

It’s been hot here lately. The grass has turned yellow and brown and many plants have flowered and died, much faster than usually is the case. I’ve been very reluctant to make any kind of food where you have to heat things so we’ve mostly lived on boring sandwiches and pasta. Nothing exctiting at all.

I was tagged by Sarah @ vegtoveg so it seems this post will be all about me and not about the food I eat.

Here are the rules :

1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.
2. Share 5 facts about yourself.
3. Tag 5 people at the end of your post and list their names, linking to them.
4. Let them know they’ve been tagged by leaving a comment at their blogs

1. I am a huge collector. I collect: journals, paper, old videogames, cups, glasses, plates, tea towels, bed linen, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair pins, shoes, bags, books, piggy banks, erotic novels from the 60s and 70s, old comics and stickers. Just the other day I went through my jewelry and sorted things out, there’s about 150 pairs or earrings there!

2. My absolute favourite things to do in my free time are going to flea markets, auctions, car boot sales, garage sales and markets. I find so many awesome things there. My obsession with this is what keeps our tiny flat so cluttered and kitschy.

3. I am fat and that’s ok. It bugs me so much to hear vegans talk about fat people like they don’t exist within the vegan community. I know I’m not the only fat one! Not all of us fatties follow the standard american diet, I don’t for one, I’m not even american and not all of us are unhealthy lazy slobs. I’m active, happy and healthy and that’s not going to change and neither is my fat status. I’m fat, proud and happy, how about that?

4. When I get tired at night you’d think I can’t speak.. at all. The confusion of speaking English and Swedish all day (when I’m with mum and Alex together I keep swapping) breaks out in all it’s glory at night and I say things that no normal person can understand. Alex laughs and laughs. Sometimes I just resort to grunting.

5. I love colourful make up but I rarely have the opportunity to wear it. I usually don’t wear makeup to work and I won’t put any on when I come home, but when I get the chance I break out the blue and the fuschia, gold, purple and orange. I think I look quite good in it actually, it’s all about confidence (I have plenty!) but it helps if your own colours are good with strong, bold make up.

I don’t think anyone hasn’t been tagged already, so I’m not going to tag anyone. But if you haven’t already posted this on your blog… DOOOOOO IT and let me know!

Prettiesflower!

Bad and good news

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Hay guys! I have bad news and good news.

The bad news is that my mother was told by the doctors at the neurological unit that the hernia she has in her neck is going to make her lose control of her arms. They don’t know when or how fast it’s going to be, just that it will happen. That’s why I haven’t been on much lately, I’ve been feeling down. The hernia is pushing on nerves in her neck making her arms difficult to use. We don’t really know what’s going to happen yet, but we know it’s bad news. I’m pretty upset about it and has spent many hours crying. Bleh. Life is unfair.

Good news:

  • Bazu sent me a big pile of magazines. She took them with her on the trip to Paris and posted them from there. Those magazines are so much more well traveled than I am! Thanks Bazu, you’ve really brightened my mood a lot. You’re awesome!
  • I’ve tried a new kind of vegan cream cheese from Tofuline which was great. It’s not even expensive, especially if you compare it to the Tofutti kind. Yay!
  • My mum, my sister Sofie and I had vegan hot dogs in Malmö not long ago, thanks to Björn at Vegankrubb who wrote about it on his blog.
  • I bought ALL the tempeh they had at one of the asian stores in Malmö last time I was there. Sorry about that but my man loves it and I was trying to cheer him up.
  • I can now be found on bookcrossing, postcrossing and swap-bot. Check it out! And consider joining in the fun.
  • My man was bored and browsing the internet and found THIS. It’s awesome in every way. We now have a ceiling cat!

Ceiling Cat is watching you masturbate!

15 things about me!

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Wow, this veganmofo thing is making me post even LESS than I used to do. Whowuddahthunk? I have an awesome recipe to share with you all, but I’m at work and my camera is at home and.. well I don’t have the necessary equipment. Trust me though, it’s soo good.

To make up for that I will offer a list of random facts about me.

  1. My real name is Emmie, could you have guessed? It means universal or whole.
  2. I used to be a veggies-hater. Until I decided to go veg at which point I had to start trying different vegetables.
  3. I sometimes eat fake meats, but I don’t love them or even like them much. Except for veggie bacon.
  4. Broccoli is my all time favourite vegetable, which is weird to think as it’s one of the ones I used to hate sooo much.
  5. I work as a carer for disabled people. It’s great except for the lack of richness I get.
  6. Although my dream job would be a vegan super chef.
  7. When I was 5 and lost my first tooth the tooth fairy wrote me a letter telling me to take care of my teeth and that I wasn’t allowed to buy sweets for my money. I bought a comic book for my money.
  8. I wish I still believed in the tooth fairy. And santa.
  9. I’m a feminist.
  10. I’m also teetotal. If you don’t know what that is, google it.
  11. I love baking, but not sweet stuff so much, I’m more of a bread person.
  12. I’m 22 awesome years old.
  13. I want to move to England when I grow up. My partner has no say in this!
  14. I can’t wait until xmas, I’m super excited!
  15. I met my partner on an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). Isn’t that kind of cute?

And tomorrow, a recipe I promise!

I’m almost healthy!

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Edit: I feel so filthy and cheated! I was sure Oreo’s were vegan but atleast here in Sweden they have whey! The first time we bought them they were imported oreo’s from the US and they were lovely and vegan 8and expensive!). Since then they’ve started being sold here in Sweden in almost every store. These are not US imported. The ones we get in our normal store isn’t vegan at all. Damnit! I feel so cheated and upset : /

Saturday was Alex’s birthday and he seems very happy about it. I was an awesome girlfriends and bought him 9 Discworld books as well as supplied him with baked goods and Homer Simpson socks. Who’s the man? You da man! (Yeah, that’s me.)

Now I’ve run out of energy and I’ve come down with a nasty cold. I’m so happy about those frozen soups now, I’m much too tired to cook.

Last week I went to the doctor to talk about my SAD. I’m not getting any medicine but I am going to start seeing a psychiatrist because they figure that might help. The doctor ran a lot of tests, she was really nice and friendly. Upon mentioning being vegan she asked me if I’d like her to do some additional tests just to make sure I wasn’t suffering from any vitamin deficiency. There was a lot of testing being done and they had to take quite a bit of blood (actually, it only LOOKS like it’s a lot of blood, but still it was scary!). Turns out almost everything about me is perfect. Perfect blood.. everything, pressure, sugar, value.. the lot. I’m fine for b12 and the other essentials too. The only thing that was off was my liver. when she phoned me up she asked if I was either taking lots and lots of pain killers or if I’m drinking lots of alcohol. I don’t do either so they’re going to do another test in a couple of weeks. I’ve read up about it on the internet and the other things that can cause this is lots of fatty foods or being on the pill. Maybe the doctor didn’t think I ate much fat, because you know, vegans are so healthy and they never eat fat… um, but I’m going to cut down my fat intake drastically and we’ll see if that makes a difference. I might be vegan but it’s not lettuce that built this very voluptuous body. If that doesn’t work I might have to go off the pill. We’ll just see.

Anyway, before going on this fat free ‘diet’ we had a party to attend. So yesterday we went to a friends house to celebrate Alex’s birthday and the hosts up coming birthday. Here’s what I brought!

cookies n' cream cupcakes
Delicious cookies n’ cream cupcakes. I <3 Isa! I ordered Vegan Cupcakes but it ran out of stock so this is a recipe from online.

Choc chip cookies
Vegan homestyle chocolate chip cookies. Dreena is a vegan goddess!

We made a few changes to this one. Mainly, have no blackstrap molasses, we didn’t use a 1/3 cup maple syrup, instead we used half maple and half golden (maple is SO expensive here).
